The Solid Waste Authority (SWA) is the governmental agency responsible for providing an economically- and environmentally-conscious integrated solid waste management and recycling system for Palm Beach County, FL. The SWA's award-winning system provides environmentally-sound and cost-effective facilities and programs to effectively manage the waste for Palm Beach County's 1.4 million residents.
Knowing the abuse inflicted on the tipping floor of any waste recovery facility, the SWA needed the most rugged and durable tipping floor application available. The owner partnered with Delta Pacific - Structural Preservation Systems (SPS) in the summer of 2006 to install an iron aggregate concrete floor at its West County facility where the original 15,340-square-foot iron floor was completely worn through due to chemicals, abrasion and every day wear-and-tear.
In June 2007, the SWA once again turned to Delta Pacific - SPS for floor repairs at its North County facility. The worn flooring needed to be replaced with the same high quality material that served them so well at the West County facility. The owner's goal was to restore the floor to its original condition in order to continue providing high quality service to Palm Beach County's residents.
Delta Pacific - SPS began the process with the surface preparation of the badly worn floor. The preparation was accomplished by milling a portion of the original floor off, and then a key way was cut around the perimeter. Two existing storm drains were adjusted and relocated, and a bonding agent and metallic aggregate topping were then placed, finished and cured. The SWA was amazed with the results when the innovative material used looked and felt like a sheet of iron - not concrete - once it cured.
One major concern for the SWA was to ensure that the slope of the floor did not change with the installation of the new aggregate concrete. Delta Pacific - SPS' knowledgeable on-site team was very careful to match the floor elevations per written specifications.
Another concern for the owner was that the restoration be completed in only 14 days and to remain within the specified contract price. Delta Pacific - SPS began the project on June 9, 2007 and the facility reopened on June 24, 2007 - both on time and on budget.
